As the Spirits Enabled Them

As the Spirits Enabled Them

If I were choose my team to conquer the world, I’d be looking for intelligent, affluent people with good looks, organizational ability, great communication skills; and I’d be looking for a blend of youth and experience, an ethnic and gender mix; and I’d probably want to throw in musical aptitude and a capacity to connect with a younger generation. When I begin to think like this, two points strike home to me. First, I wouldn’t pass my own selection process! Second, I don’t think I’d have ever selected the team JESUS did!

I’m always amazed by the way Jesus managed to find a bunch of misfits like the disciples to the change the world. He got Matthew, a tax collector for the Romans, to work alongside Simon the Zealot, who wanted nothing more than to damage to anything Roman! He transformed a bunch of fishermen to fishers of men. He used the hotheaded Peter and the equally thunderous James and John to bring peace into people’s live.

One small, seemingly significant phrase help us understand how the disciples changed from fear to faith, from confusion to courage, from misunderstanding to ministry. In Acts 2 we read the familiar passage about the Holy Spirit coming down from heaven on the day of Pentecost:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. – Acts 2:1-4 NIV

Without getting drawn into too much theology, I want to focus on the simple words ” as the Spirits enabled them.” It’s these words that help us understand how the disciples were transformed into world changers. God’s presence was upon them, and he gave them the power and the ability to carry out the Great Commission.

Andrew preached in what we now call Bulgaria and Georgia and died on a cross in a Greek colony. James the brother of John preached in Judea and was beheaded, while John himself was exiled to the island of Patmos and wrote his gospel. Tradition has it that Thaddeus preached to all of Mesopotamia and was killed by arrows, and after writing his gospel, Matthew was crucified in Alexandria, and Simon the Zealot became the second bishop of Jerusalem. The first bishop was James the beaten to death. Nathanael preached in India; Philip preached in Turkey, while both Peter and Thomas ended up preaching to about five significant people groups each, before being killed for their faith.

Now the ending of all those disciples maybe quite frightening but the point is this: God never calls you to a task or a mission without equipping you to carry it out. The Holy Spirit will enable you.

Just as the good news of Jesus didn’t end with Jesus, it also didn’t end with disciples. It carries on with us today – we are no less charged with the Great Commission than were those first followers of Jesus. They weren’t simply spectators, and neither are we. We are called to serve and to share and to bring the light into a dark world. At times we may feel daunted and ill equipped; often we will be tired and discouraged; occasionally we may believe we have little to other or have been disqualified from the task; but because the Holy Spirit enables us, we can rely on the power of God and not on our own feelings or abilities.

But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. – Acts 1:8 NLT

Philippines Celebrates Social Media Day

Social Media Day 2012

Social Media Day 2012

Last June 30, the world celebrates the 3rd annual Social Media Day. Mashable.com took the initiative in 2010 and launched Social Media Day on June 30 as a way to recognize the exciting ever-evolving digital revolution. Since then, social media enthusiasts have hosted and attended Social Media Day meetups in several cities worldwide.

The Social Media Team of Visual Ally together with their Director for Social Media Mr. Dante “Ayan” Deato were there and experienced

that event. There were a huge number of bloggers, Twitterati, advocates and practitioners from media.

I had the opportunity to meet Daphne Paez and Tonyo Cruz a Filipino blogger, social media practitioner and consumer advocate . I even got a chance to have a picture taken with them.

The event organizer Tonyo Cruz said, “we were only expecting 300, but we can say that we reached 411 participants!” The large turn-out at the 30 June Social Media Capital affair, the first of its kind in the Philippines under Mashable’s Social Media Day worldwide event series, showed the vibrancy and willingness of some of Manila’s social media denizens to gather and celebrate the importance of social media in the country, past and present. As of last count, 444 participants  were registered for the affair. “We were surprised in a very pleasant way,”

The event, held at the Philippine Stock Exchange Plaza in Makati, was one of a series of parallel events held throughout the country. Quezon City had its own Social Media Day gathering, as did Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao. The name was chosen because of the fact that the Philippines has had a consistent record of being either early adopters or leaders in using social media.

Addressing the gathering on harnessing the Philippines’ social media capital were social media pundit Carlo Ople; celebrity and UNICEF campaigner Daphne Oseña-Paez; and Gang Badoy, founder of the advocacy group Rock Ed, which celebrated its seventh anniversary yesterday. Ople spoke about the overall social media landscape in the country and the issues confronting social media users in the country. The other two speakers also discussed how social media helped their advocacies and encouraged listeners to do the same.

Apart from the addresses, there was a special appearance by this year’s Miss World Philippines winner Queeneerich Rehman. There were also games and give-aways, a common fixture of similar and much smaller gatherings known to some Twitter users as “tweet-ups.”

Congratulations for a successful Social Media Day Meetup! 🙂

New Bourne Legacy 2012: Trailer is Out!

The Bourne Legacy 2012So, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ wasn’t the last one after all. With Matt Damon calling it quits on the series, Jeremy Renner takes the lead in this fourth film, with Edward Norton on baddie duty and Albert Finney and Joan Allen seem set to reprise their roles as Dr Albert Hirsch and Pam Landy respectively. Filming is taking place in New York, The Philippines and Canada – the plot’s carefully under wraps but you can bet that conspiracies and politics play a hefty part in the action-packed proceedings. Rachel Weisz is the likely love interest.

The Bourne Legacy is an upcoming American action spy film and the fourth installment in the eponymous Bourne film series, which is based on the Jason Bourne novels created by Robert Ludlum and Eric Van Lustbader. The story sets off after the conclusion of The Bourne Ultimatum with Tony Gilroy as the director, screenwriter of the first three films. Matt Damon and the character Jason Bourne are not in this film, but Damon has not ruled out starring in any future films as long as Paul Greengrass returns as director. The film is named after but is not based on The Bourne Legacy, a Bourne novel written by author Eric Van Lustbader.

The films open August 3, 2012! See you there! 🙂
